Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí y Domenech was born on May 11, 1904, in Figueres, Spain, situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains, just 16 miles from the French border. His father, Salvador Dalí y Cusi, worked as a middle-class lawyer and notary. While his father adopted a strict disciplinary approach to raising children, Dalí’s mother, Felipa Domenech Ferres, took a contrasting approach, often nurturing Dalí’s artistic inclinations and embracing his early eccentricities.
