Painter and poet, Durrant was born in Lavenham, Suffolk, and studied at Camberwell School of Art (1948-52). A member of the New English Art Club, from the late 1940s he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and in numerous commercial galleries in London. In the 1950s he moved to Cambridge. At this time his early figurative style began to change, becoming more abstract and formally simplified.
