Born Port Seaton, Edinburgh. Bellany studied at Edinburgh College of Art and at the Royal College of Art, London and was said to be the most acclaimed Scottish artist of his generation.
His work in the 1960-70s dealt with original sin, guilt, sex and death. His characteristic paintings are large compositions featuring his own personal symbolism, often derived from the sea and from religion.
In 2004 John Bellany produced The Eyemouth Disaster Suite, a series of lithographs dedicated to the 19th-century sea fishing disaster.
