Born in Warsaw, Poland. Herman was a highly regarded Polish-born painter who influenced contemporary art, particularly in the UK. He studied at the Warsaw School of Art and lived in Brussels, Glasgow and London, then 1944 to 1953 lived in the Welsh mining village of Ystradgynlais.
Herman’s work often depicted workers as its subject and was inherently political. He is best known for his sombre pictures of Welsh miners, with whom he felt a strong affinity. He often showed their black figures silhouetted against the sun.
