Ian Rayer-Smith, Expressionist

Ian has a large fan base of his work not just in the UK but worldwide, working with choice galleries in Munich, Australia, New York and indeed Shrewsbury. Shropshire is His hometown and has studio’s in Manchester and recently (2021) in Cheshire. We spoke to Ian, Live on Instagram about his life as an artist, how he started and what impact the lockdowns have had on his artwork.

Retrospective: “Calming Horizontals”

September 30th – November 10th

1931-2020

Born in Liverpool in 1931. Eric won a scholarship to Liverpool Grammar school then later secured a grant to attend Liverpool Art School. He was then awarded a scholarship to study in Italy at Florence Art School for 1 year. Eric then went on to Cardiff College of Art as a full time lecturer and also worked as Art critic at The Times, Eric married and moved to Shropshire where he was was inspired and painted landscapes of the Shropshire countryside and “calming horizontals”.
